    I remember reading the book, this didn't happen.

    It was actually quite disturbing. The boy lived with his grandma, and didn't have any parents.

    When he turned into a mouse he said that it was OK since his grandma was an old woman and didn't have long to live and since he was a mouse he would age much faster and they would die at a somewhat similar time so none of them really got lonely.
